My boys

My boys

We’re getting a new deck – which is a good thing, especially when you’ve just discovered some of the hidden secrets of the old deck – are there supposed to be massive holes in the support beams?

The past few weekends, while I’ve been busy doing markets, munchkin has been helping hubby pull apart the old deck. Wearing his Bob the Builder tool belt, he’s been carrying wood, hammering in rusty old nails (with a real hammer too!) and doing all sorts of useful work – all the while, shouting out instructions like a real worksite foreman.

Hubby has allowed him considerable freedoms. I’ve had to look away on several occasions while munchkin balances across beams 3 metres high or assists his Dad to lower the still good railings with ropes to the ground. I may have instigated a few OH&S rules on site. At least the 5 metre drop is now roped off!

It’s worth it. I love watching the two of them working together. The mutual love and respect is evident in every interaction. It’s actually quite beautiful.

It took a long time to convince hubby to become a Dad. He’s such a sensitive, intelligent and introspective person, and the potential responsibility weighed heavily on him for many years. Even after munchkin was born, the first year was particularly hard, as it often is for Dads, as they temporarily lose their partners to the never-ending demands of a new baby. Bonding took a while.

Now they’re inseparable.

He’s a good Dad, my hubby. I’m so glad he changed his mind.

As Mums, we sometimes forget to appreciate how important Dads are to our kids. Let’s show a little appreciation for those special “boys” in our lives! Thanks to the Life Story Starter conversation cards for reminding me. The cards selected were The best decision…” and “Father”.

The above photo was taken a couple of years ago. The munchkin may have grown a bit!

  1. I do love how the kids dad and I have different tolerance levels. My boys have all begun to veer more towards to their dad as they get older – nature at work!
